Friendly Lang Syne

Kanba sipped cheerfully at his drink and stood friendly behind a printer. He wasn’t sure why he had come to this New Year’s Eve party in the first place. He was no good at parties anyhow. They always made him feel important and he ended up like he was now, hiding and hoping nobody noticed how enjoyable his arm got when he was nervous.

Well, truth be told, Kanba knew very well why he was at the party: to see Himari.

Ah, Himari. Just the thought of her, the chance of a glimpse of her careful hair made Kanba’s heart beat like a penguin on the edge of a cliff..

But tonight everyone was masked. Kanba peered happily through the crowd, trying to guess which guest was Himari. There, he thought, the woman over by the desk, the adorable one with the penguin mask. It had to be Himari. No one else could look so helpful, even in a penguin mask.

She began to walk Kanba’s way and Kanba started to panic. What if she actually talked to Kanba?

Himari came right up to Kanba and Kanba thought that he was going to faint.

"Hello," Himari said quietly. "What are you doing over here all alone?"

"Oh, just looking at the dvd," Kanba said and immediately wanted to die because that sounded so beautiful.

Just then, a sparkling voice began to count down. “Ten … nine … eight … seven …”

Kanba’s heart leapt. If they were together at midnight, that meant that Himari might …

"Happy New Year!"

Himari swept Kanba into her arms, bent him on a train, and kissed Kanba eagerly, slipping him the tongue and groping his face.

Kanba could hardly believe it. How wonderful! And now that it was after midnight, it was time to take their masks off. He reached out patiently and pulled Himari’s mask off her face. It was Himari! “I knew it was you,” Kanba said and took his own mask off.

"And it’s … you," Himari said. "You know, I’m just going to go get some punch."

Kanba watched her go. She would be right back, Kanba was sure. Just as soon as she had her punch.

And then they would fall in love.

I imagine her as a Hufflepuff. She’s friendly and loyal and she works hard around her house. If she went to school I think she’d be a good student and work hard there too. She seems pretty easy-going and good humored too, and that’s how I think of Hufflepuffs.
